Program Itinerary of the morocco desert tours fes to marrakech

morocco desert tours fes to marrakech

Day 1: Fes » Azrou (Cedar forest) » Midelt » Erfoud » Merzouga (Night in Desert Camp) [467 Km]

We will pick you up from your riad/hotel to start your 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour then drive south to Ifrane and Azrou through the Middle Atlas mountains.

On the way, we will stop at the cedar forests to see the Barbarian Apes in their natural habitat. Traveling through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt and along the magnificent Ziz Gorges carved through volcanic rock, you’ll see views of the Middle-Atlas plateau and the scenery changing to reveal hints of the desert as you approach the city of Errachidia.

After lunch, we’ll continue our journey through the Ziz Valley to Erfoud, Rissani, and Merzouga. After a glass of mint tea, we’ll leave our luggage in a safe room then take a camel ride to a Berber camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi Sad Dunes which are the highest in North Africa. The camel trek takes about 1h 30 min from the camp to set up Berber tents for our night in the desert.

The tents are well equipped with mattresses, blankets, and cushions. After dinner, we will gather around the fire and enjoy the sound of traditional Berber drums under the stars. That’s the end of 1st day of our morocco desert tours fes to marrakech.

2nd day: Merzouga – Dades Gorges

If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. After breakfast at the camp, we leave for Tinghir and the Toudgha gorges. On the way, you pass the water channels – “khettarat” – which you can descend into to appreciate the architecture and genius behind this form of irrigation which prevents evaporation in the summer heat. The channels start at a higher gradient at one end until they finally emerge at the surface of the soil where they are fed into the fields. You can find out more about these channels by reading Andrew Wilson’s work.In the gorge and the valley, there are opportunities to walk beyond the gorge itself or by the village gardens and fields before you reach it. Later the itinerary continues to the Dades Valley. The area, which now forms the Dades Gorges, lay at the bottom of the sea millions of years ago. Great quantities of sediment were deposited around giant coral reefs, and over time this material became compacted into a variety of sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone. Eventually, the movement of the earth’s crust caused the region to rise above the sea, forming the Atlas Mountains and surrounding landscape. The night is spent in a hotel or kasbah.

Day 3: Dades » Ouarzazate » Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah » Marrakech [315 Km]

On the last day of our 3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour, we will cross the Valley of the Dades and the Valley of the Roses until arriving at Ouarzazate, where we will visit the Kasbah of Taourirt.

After about 25 km of the road, we will see the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, declared World Heritage by UNESCO famous for being the scenario of cinematographic blockbusters like the Oscar-winning “Lawrence of Arabia”, “The Protective Sky” or “Babel”.

We will follow the road through the Tizi N-Tichka pass and the beautiful landscapes of the High Atlas mountains that will lead us to the “Red City”, Marrakech and here you can say goodbye to your guide.
